Watching Star Wars at a Hotel in Rügen

What a great day we had all had. My wife and I and our two children were staying at the Hotel Rügen on the Baltic island of Rügen which is Germany's largest island. We had spent the morning on the beach, the children running in and out of the sea, which is very safe for swimming, as my wife and I relaxed in a Strandkorb. A Strandkorb I would describe as being similar to having two deckchairs inside a box but far more comfortable. The seat tips backwards and there is a footrest should you need it. Two people can sit in the Strandkorb and are able to use it at the same time.

In the afternoon we made a visit to Jasmund National Park which is Germany's smallest National Park. It was well worth the visit. We all enjoyed it very much. As we made our way back to the Hotel Rügen we were all beginning to feel tired and looking forward to a relaxing evening. This was the first time we had been to the island of Rügen and were really enjoying ourselves. The weather was perfect (not too baking hot) and there was plenty to see. Rügen is a diverse island of genteel seaside resorts, quiet little fishing villages, mile long beaches, sparkling lakes and 100 year old lighthouses.

The day light was beginning to fade and as we entered the Hotel Rügen we would hear soft music as people made their way into the Dining Room for their evening meal. But it wasn't the music, or the fact that it was time to dine that caught my attention. No, I had caught sight of a poster which was on display by the side of the door advertising that the film Star Wars would be showing that evening.

Now, Star Wars is probably the most popular film of all time. I first saw it as a child when special effects in films was something very new and the Star Wars saga, with it's struggle between good and evil, democracy and empire made a profound impact. The first three released movies (the Original Trilogy) are about the Galactic Civil War and the rise of the Galactic Empire in an epic struggle between good and evil. Since the first three films, there have been three more and the sixth Star Wars film Episode 111: Revenge of the Sith was released on May 19th 2005.

Feeling very excited at the thought that we could end a fantastic day by seeing Star Wars film once again, I hurriedly ate my dinner and together with the family made sure we got the best seat in the house to enjoy the film. As my children had never seen this film it was certainly an evening to remember. They, like I was at their age, soon became lost in the world of the young farm boy Luke Skywalker. It was the end of a perfect day and the end of our week at the Hotel Rügen. I can only hope our stay at the Baltic Sea Apartments (
Ferienwohnung Ostsee) is just as enjoyable.
